Weekly Engineering Competency Review #8

Weekly Engineering Competency Review #8

This post is part of my weekly engineering competency review series. At the end of each week, I publish a review of the notes I thought over the past week. My goal is to create a log where I can capture these insights for future me to review.

The competencies below are from CircleCI engineering competency matrix.

Reliability, delivery, and accountability

The goal is to successfully manage cross-team commitments, their progress, and roadmap to delivery. Anticipate and communicate blockers, delays, and cost ballooning across teams, before they require escalation. Ensure expectations across teams and stakeholders are clarified between all parties involved.

What's Good

  • Started an experiment for improving the team's delivery

Every 2 weeks, we have a frontend planning session where we assign tasks related to improving developer productivity and user experience. Observing the past few sessions, I felt we have a lot of room for improvement in making sure every team member understands, is aligned on, and can articulate the goals of the team. To try to improve this, we decided to try out an experiment of adding red/yellow/green status to our tasks.

Do Better

  • Ensuring that everything that is yellow/red has a diagnosis and fix

To see if red/yellow/green task status is working for our team, we need make sure everything that is yellow/red has a diagnosis and fix.

Action Item

  • Ask team to add diagnosis and fix to the tasks with yellow/red status
